Secret Squirrel recalls the ever changing levels of radioactivity at Fukushima,
and the also ever changing go around concerning what levels of what were measured in whatever and what were the safe levels then and the ever increasing upwards safe levels the government of Japan announced as things got ever worse.Well Secret Squirrel has pondered things and has considered that perhaps the Japanese government and others, were not actually lying to the people but just confused not only at the rising levels of radiation in the midst of the finally admitted three nuclear meltdowns,but to the actual ways and means of measuring things in a proper light so all things seemed to be pretty good all round. Well let’s first start with the actual definitions and measurements of radioactivity.

Now…

1) The amount of radioactivity emitted by a source is measured in Becquerels or
Curies. The SI unit the becquerel (Bq), one decay per second. The traditional unit
Curie (Ci) is 3.7 × 1010 Bq and is about the radioactivity of a gram of radium.

2) The amount of radiation received by a source is measured in grays or rads. The
SI unit Gray (Gy) corresponds to one joule of energy absorbed by one kilogram of
matter. The traditional unit rad is 0.01 Gy.

3)The biological effect of radiation is measured in Sieverts or rems. Biologically
effective dose is the amount of radiation received multiplied by the relative
biological effectiveness (RBE) of the type of radiation source. For x-rays, the
RBE is 1. For alpha rays, the RBE is 20. The SI unit of effective dose is the
Sievert (Sv), which corresponds to one Gy of x-rays. A rem is 0.01 Sv.

In short it’s coming at us every which way at the same time,and going in each and
every direction as well,so for some reason unbeknownst to us all, we have
Becquerels,Curies,Grays, Rads,Sieverts and Rems.Things have to be made much more simple, easier, we must simplify,and we can simplify things in such a manner that everybody can understand what’s going on concerning emitted, received and
radiation absorbed biologically. Of course this has been beyond the ken and
abilities of nuclear scientists and politicians, it’s rocket science it seems to
them all.Well, not so to Squirrel,nay, Squirrel has a solution. We must come up
with a suitably acceptable name and measure of radiation acceptable and easily
understood by all.and we have it, the Banana is proposed, the banana equivalent
dose, abbreviated BED to put it in simple terms that the lay men can understand
quite easily, as well as scientists and politicians as well. Besides bananas,
other foods that are rich in potassium (and therefore in 40K) are potatoes, kidney
beans, sunflower seeds, and nuts; especially brazil nuts, which may have up to 444
Bq/kg (12 nCi/kg) — four times the radioactivity of bananas.But I have selected
the banana since it is therefor a much finer form of measurement,much more
sensitive and therefor meaningful in a scientific measurement sort of way.

A banana equivalent dose (abbreviated BED) is a unit of radiation exposure,
informally defined as the dose a person will absorb from eating one banana,one
(1,and not more than one at any given time) Banana Equivalent Dose, 1 (One)
BED.The concept is based on the fact that bananas, like most organic material,
naturally contain a certain amount of radioactive isotopes—even in the absence of
any artificial pollution or contamination. The banana equivalent dose was meant to
express the severity of exposure to radiation, such as resulting from nuclear
power, nuclear weapons or medical procedures, in terms that would make sense to
most people,even politicians.

Specifically the BED is based on the banana itself, internally,having radioactive
potassium 40.The banana equivalent dose is the radiation exposure received by
eating a single banana. Radiation leaks from nuclear plants are often measured in
extraordinarily small units (the picocurie, a millionth of a millionth of a curie,
is typical). By comparing the exposure from these events to a banana equivalent
dose, a more realistic assessment of the actual risk can sometimes be obtained.

But why bother converting this to bananas? Partly because it’s hoped BED is
friendlier than sieverts and grays and rads and rems, and all the other
paraphernalia.But  the BED is useful for several reasons.

First, it reminds us that radiation is commonplace. You can’t get much more
ordinary than a banana.

Second, we know eating one banana won’t kill us.

Third, think about eating 20 million bananas, equal to a dose causing severe,
sometimes fatal, radiation poisoning. You’d probably die from something other than
the radiation well before you were anywhere near 20 million. Please do not attempt
this at home. Even over an 80-year lifetime it’s nearly 700 a day.At low doses the
bananas come in bunches, then rise through the thousands to the millions,
corresponding to micro-sieverts, milli-sieverts and sieverts, the SI
unit.Generally 1 banana equates to .1usv.(The standard measure of the biological
effect of radiation is the sievert. One sievert is a heck of a big dose, but one
tenth of a millionth of a sievert, or 0.1 micro sieverts, is roughly the dose from
eating one banana.)

Imagine newscasts and public information bulletins using the BED
unit…………let’s have a look say at a Japanese broadcast of say the Fukushima
situation…..

Here is a report from Japanese newsanchor of a government annoucement by Japanese Politician, I Fook Yew
    “Monitoring of radiation levels on the spot is ongoing. At point MP4, where a
reading of 1,015µSv was detected yesterday, a radiation level of 44.6µSv was
recorded at 00:30 this morning, and a level of 36.7µSv at 6:00am. After the start
of venting around 9:20, a reading of 76.9µSv was recorded at 9:20 and of 70.3µSv
at 9:30.”

Now imagine the say, equivalent, but rather expressed in the much simpler and
easier to understand, Banana Equivalent Units….

“The radiation spiked up to 30 bananas a day (2 days ago) and then fell back down
to 1 to 2 bananas per day.”

Now isn’t that much more sane,simpler and easier to understand.Politicians and
government officals should love it, they could still lie by using incorrect BED
unit statements.

Now,what is it’s relationship with standard units of radiation?Well the BED is a
radiation dose equivalent unit; that is, a unit for measuring potentially damaging
radiation absorbed by body tissue, rather than the total radiation (of any kind)
emitted by a source or absorbed by matter. The corresponding SI unit is the
sievert (Sv), defined as a radiation dose biologically equivalent to one joule of
absorbed gamma-ray energy per kilogram of tissue. In the U.S, an older unit, the
roentgen equivalent man (rem), equal to 0.01 sieverts, is sometimes used.
The absorbed radiation dose depends on the type and energy of the emitted
particles, as well as on the location of the source in the body (external,
inhaled, ingested, etc.). According to the US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), the conversion factor (CEDE) is 5.02 nanosieverts over 50 years for each
becquerel of isotopically pure potassium-40 ingested by an average adult.[7] Using
this factor, one banana equivalent dose comes out as about 5.02 nSv/Bq × 31 Bq/g × 0.5 g ˜ 78 nanosieverts = 0.078 µSv. In informal publications one often sees this estimate rounded up to 0.1 µSv.After the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, the NRC detected radioactive iodine in local milk at levels of 20 picocuries/liter, a dose much less than one would receive from ingesting a single banana. Thus a 12 fl oz glass of the slightly radioactive milk would have about 1/75th BED (banana equivalent dose).

Here is a table of the number of bananas exposure, and the event that it results
from

Ah but what if politicians sense that we’ve gone bananas and all we understand and convert everything to is the singularity of the banana?

The answer is obvious; they’ll say bananas should be banned.

Secret Squirrel,
MRL
MP,Dunny On The Wold,
Minister For Re-Deranged Re-Engineering.

Secret Squirrel examines nuclear and its financial costs, versus those of thermal plants,thermal plants fired by whatever means,be it natural gas, oil, or coal.Squirrel see Nuclear as being extremely expensive in the sum toto, taking in any means what so ever and factoring the costs in.Many times, the construction of a reactor,using the USA as an example,has been halted due to costs rising above and beyond,costs stated to be rising due to construction structural problems, errors in construction being impossible to correct,and as stated being, that on completion electrical costs would HAVE to be increased to the consumer as well. So, nuclear is far from being the efficient,cheap solution to any particular energy crunch. Face it, you can build a
nuclear reactor, or you can build other types of generating facilities.Let’s look at the costs now of nuclear, aside the radiation costs when a plant goes sour,the costs to farmers,fisherman, the costs to human life and lives,for a drastic period,the maiming,crippling,mutating effects of nuclear on the yet to be born,the cancers they generate when they go sour,the human and life factors, let’s look at the heavy financial burdens they are besides the now evident extremely dangerous,unmanageable, extremely horrific bio hazard that they are.

Now construction costs, as of 2004, run to US$1,300 per kilowatt, or $650(to 780) million for a 500 MWe unit coal fired plant cost to build.Nuclear plants run at,usually, in the vicinity of,when producing electricity, twice that 1000mw area,around say 1300mw,output per reactor,average.So say costs of thermal plant then doubles to 1300,million, or 1.3Billion.Even if we then triple, it 1.9billion for 1500MW,versus the single reactor, the thermal equivalent is, really, inexpensive by comparison,as the Germans say, nicht whar? Thermal plants there for come out very,very much cheaper to build and operate versus the nuclear reactor.Say the units are a 4 reactor job,as Cherokee was, that equates to 7.6billion…all right…….but
Cherokee,nuclear, cost,and was abandoned at. an amazing 11billion building cost,and was still rising, when it was abandoned,but a thermal plant same capacity as Cherokee’s 3 reactors, would cost,fixed,5.7 billion.Thermal is justifiably cheaper, by a very long shot.There’s yet more to Cherokee, let’s look at that.

The energy efficiency of a conventional thermal power station, considered as salable energy (in MW) produced at the plant busbars as a percent of the heating value of the fuel consumed, is typically 33% to 48% efficient,but politicians are refusing to allow utility companies to build coal fired power plants,favoring,strangely,expensively, and dangerously, nuclear plants.Public officials in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas have already denied several utilities permits to build coal fired plants that would generate cheap electricity for consumers.Keep in mind that wind energy is more expensive than coal fired electrical
plants.

Let’s continue with yet another abandonment of nuclear construction, that of Marble Hill.When construction was finally closed,stopped,halted, more than $2.8 billion had been spent on construction, and it was only 20% complete,imagine, 2 1000MW reactors.A thermal would cost 2.6 billion for same energy value of electricity the reactor(s) would produce, and yet be COMPLETED for that cost, and Marble Hill, at 2.8billion,was only 20% completed.So where is the cost energy saving there? So not true then is the statement that nuclear is cheaper,less costly, so very not at all.There’s yet more to Marble Hill, let’s look
at that much more closely…Marble Hill had two reactors, or was to , of about 1000mw each….Construction did proceed on Marble Hill, but at a somewhat slower pace with more regulatory emphasis on safety issues. Then a symbolic bombshell dropped on the project when, on May 8, 1979, Charles Cutshall, a former employee of Marble Hill’s general contractor, Gust K. Newburg, filed an affidavit indicating that he and other Newburg employees had been told to “cover up” construction defects before inspectors could find them.When it finally closed,as in construction terminated, more than $2.8 billion had been spent on construction, and it was only 20% complete…and that, it seems, was defective.How many similar plants have defects in their so called containment structures?We can only guess, BUT we know it CAN and DOES, happen in practice.Specifically, the defects that Cutshall revealed were in the concrete poured in the walls of the containment buildings. Cutshall claimed that “honeycombs” were in a number of areas of the vital containment structure that would protect people from a breach of radioactive gas should a situation like Three Mile Island happen at Marble Hill.Not very enticing in construction is it?

Let’s look at another costly non construction, or at least, completion.The Shearon Harris site was originally designed for four reactors, but budget issues and weak demand resulted in three of the reactors being cancelled. The final cost was nearly $3.9B,at abandonment.Yet more thermal plants could easily have been funded, and successfully built and in operation, at fractional costs for the sum total.

And how further expensive has been nuclear.Well, look at these abandonments of construction of reactors,at Bellefonte.Black Fox,Bodega Bay,Callaway,Cherokee,Clinton,Columbia,Hartsville,Haven,Hope Creek,Marble Hill,Midland,North Anna,Pebble Springs,Perry,Phipps Bend,River Bend,Pilrim,Satsop,Sears Island,Seabrook,Shearon Harris,Surrey,Tyrone,Yellow Creek,Zimmer,These abandonments in construction,have between them 45 reactors cancelled during construction due to costs, high costs,
enormous expenditures.So the reactors were thence far too costly for complete, and while 1 billion,at least per abandonment in construction, is low expenditure, some went to items such as $2.8 billion for only 20% complete.So nuclear is inexpensive,cheap,easy to construct? So very,very NOT!It SHOULD scream at you! It does! It should SCREAM at THEM,GOVERNMENT, but the scream falls on ears,deaf,dumb,blind, stupid,ignorant,retarded,and idiot, ears of the government, the politician.The 2.8 billion uselessly expended ,in this case,on Marble Hill,would’ve provided for 5 (five),count’em, 5(five) thermal plants of equal
electrical output,had the monies been expended on construction of them,and successful construction it WOULD most definitely have been as well.So in place of those 5, NONE,ZERO.Expensive? Yes,most assuredly, financially unsound decisions,undertakings, even yet in terms of cost alone.We all know the undertakings nuclear can and has resulted in, and is resulting in,undertakings not to be suffered by use of thermal,don’t we.in terms of the cost LOST entirely on the abandonments, all of America could’ve been
provided with CHEAP electrical energy in sums vastly greater than existing nuclear plants all wasted, for nothing, on the nuclear dream,the nuclear lie, the nuclear hallucinogenic idiocy politicians suffer from.And many yet more as well in number than those present and existent nuclear plants.Is nuclear justified financially?In no way shape nor form.Cheap nuclear energy?

An unreality, a lie, the nuclear lie.

Let’s look at Vermont, and the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant.It is a General Electric boiling water reactor (BWR) type nuclear power plant currently owned by Entergy. It is located in the town of Vernon, Vermont, and generates 620 megawatts (MWe) of electricity at full power.Note that a thermal coal or other fired plant could do the same,produce just as much, cost considerably less, and be infinitely safer in operations.Now the plant began commercial operations in 1972. It provided 71.8% of all electricity generated in Vermont in 2008, which is 35% of the overall electricity used in the state.Again, note so too could a thermal plant you know.

So telling is the lie,cheap rate………….let’s look at the cost of the latest constructions…..

Recent construction cost estimates
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economics_of_new_nuclear_power_plants)
2007 estimates have considerable uncertainty in overnight cost, and vary widely from $2,950/kWe (overnight cost) to a Moody’s Investors Service conservative estimate of between $5,000 and $6,000/kWe (final or “all-in” cost).

However, commodity prices shot up in 2008, and so all types of plants will be more expensive than previously calculated[19] In June 2008 Moody’s estimated that the cost of installing new nuclear capacity in the U.S. might possibly exceed $7,000/kWe in final cost.

The reported prices at six new pressurized water reactors are indicative of costs for that type of plant:

February 2008 — For two new AP1000 reactors at its Turkey Point site Florida Power & Light calculated overnight capital cost from $2444 to $3582 per kW, which were grossed up to include cooling towers, site works, land costs, transmission costs and risk management for total costs of $3108 to $4540 per kilowatt. Adding in finance charges increased the overall figures to $5780 to $8071 per kW.

March 2008 — For two new AP1000 reactors in Florida Progress Energy announced that if built within 18 months of each other, the cost for the first would be $5144 per kilowatt and the second $3376/kW – total $9.4 billion. Including land, plant components, cooling towers, financing costs, license application, regulatory fees, initial fuel for two units, owner’s costs, insurance and taxes, escalation and contingencies the total would be about $14 billion.

May 2008 — For two new AP1000 reactors at the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Generating Station in South Carolina South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. and Santee Cooper expected to pay $9.8 billion (which includes forecast inflation and owners’ costs for site preparation, contingencies and project financing).

November 2008 — For two new AP1000 reactors at its Lee site Duke Energy Carolinas raised the cost estimate to $11 billion, excluding finance and inflation, but apparently including other owners costs.

November 2008 — For two new AP1000 reactors at its Bellefonte site TVA updated its estimates for overnight capital cost estimates ranged to $2516 to $4649/kW for a combined construction cost of $5.6 to 10.4 billion (total costs of $9.9 to $17.5 billion).

April 2008 — Georgia Power Company reached a contract agreement for two AP1000 reactors to be built at Vogtle, at an estimated final cost of $14 billion plus $3 billion for necessary transmission upgrades.

In comparison, the AP1000 units already under construction in China have been reported with substantially lower costs due to significantly lower labour rates:

In 2007, the reported cost for the first two AP1000 units under construction in China was $5.3 billion.

In 2009, the published cost for 4 AP1000 reactors under construction in China was a total of $8 billion.

Notice the immense costs, a very far cry from the by comparison peanut cost of a thermal plant. Of course, these are the projected costs, the actual construction costs……curiously…….escalate yet further.

Coal fired, and thermal, have a life expectancy of 25 years in design,same a nuclear really, but can also be easily renovated to go far longer,at far less cost, than a renovated job on a nuclear reactor plant,and at far less cost than nuclear plants.Also note that no less than 38 coal fired plants STILL exist in the United States,from the 1940’s.A nuclear plant would so utterly and completely not be here in that time slot.The coal fired goes on and on and on and on….and safely too.

Generally speaking, nuclear plants were designed for a life of about 30 years. Newer plants are designed for a 40 to 60-year operating life.Thermal plants easily match and exceed this.But what happens at the end of life, the end of a reactor? It must be decommissioned,dismantled,taken away,buried etc etc etc, and so too must it’s nuclear fuel needs be decommissioned as it were.How is this done? Well there is the so called..

Safe Enclosure (or Safestor(e) SAFSTOR):

This option postpones the final removal of controls for a longer period, usually in the order of 40 to 60 years.

And..

Entombment:

This option entails placing the facility into a condition that will allow the remaining on-site radioactive material to remain on-site without the requirement of ever removing it totally. This option usually involves reducing the size of the area where the radioactive material is located and then encasing the facility in a long-lived structure such as concrete, that will last for a period of time to ensure the remaining radioactivity is no longer of concern.

Yes,it can be dismantled and buried, and the spent and nuclear fuels specially stored in water pools for dozens of years etc. and only safely as long as it’s storage pool water levels can be maintained, else the rods go in to self-criticality and release radiations just as they do and would if a reactor suffers coolant loss. And so now we know,too, that the building itself, et all support buildings,etc what they previously cost in sum toto, is a write off……in short…….the building(s) is(are) useless,in all instances……and build a new reactor.well look at the costs of building…..and the escalating costs……

Additional costs, hidden costs, of a reactor…….the required mining, processing of and then conversion to Fuel rods and from rods assembly to fuel bundles,in short creation of it’s fuel,is expensive.Consider coal,oil,natural gas is much easily, and if not int he same fashion, got out of the ground, yes, but then nuclear fuel has enormous processing development,creation costs versus that which the thermal plant uses.Thermal plants use coal, oils, natural gas, easily gotten hold of, processed as you are familiar with.Thermals also don not have the after use storage of costs of the so called spent (only partially spent bundles,you know, as are most definitely capable of self-criticality whence water is removed from them as we know, generating the self same nuclear radiations of all varieties just as if the reactor had exposed and melted down, especially since they are stored in QUANTITY,vast QUANTITY at the nuclear site or wherever they are stored, and thence after the cost of dismantling and burial storage of a dirty reactor),fuels.

Tired of the thermal plant?Switch it off.Decommission it, simply abandon it. It can be started up again later,anytime really at miniscule costs.On, off, no problem.Reactors are,however, an immense problems at offing or at least trying to,safely that is, and we’ve seen the problems with respect to Chernobyl, and now Fukushima, and results of the problem with nuclear plants………and……….at what costs now, what with food chain contamination, jobs,livelihoods, fishing etc etc etc, and….. of health…….immediate in some cases, long term on others(30-40 year cancer developments,sufferings,and symptomatic deaths), mutations of,genetic damage of, future generations(as in deformities,infirmaties,malformities).All at high cost indeed.So
where is this cheap,easy,safe, electricity? It isn’t,it doesn’t exist.Just build and start up and commission a nuclear plant, and the utility rises the cost of electricity. However I must admit,thermals are subject to the costs of oil it seems,oil fired, that is.So start up a thermal oil fired, and utilities raise the costs,due they say,due to cost of the fuel due to the greater consumption of same,and of electricity so generated but, recall the more one consumes according to the laws of capitalism, the laws of supply and demand,the costs of said fuel,are supposed to…drop,but this economic law does not function in reality.No, costs are raised with increasing demand, the reverse of capitalism, so what’s at work there? Natural gas is not supposed to
increase with the costs of oil importation,world prices as it were.But me thinks to government is at work here.in detrimental fashion, working hand in glove with the oil monopoly and the natural gas companies as well, as natural gas is in no way shape nor form dependent on nor connected with oil, but when one rises,the other does as well, strangely, and out of sorts.

However, government could and should regulate this, but then government seems to be influenced by utilities and oil concerns in and after some here to fore not revealed publicly fashion. Never the less, in spite of all this, thermal generation is very much safer for the general public and vastly less expensive as well.Face it, a thermal plant will NEVER result in a Chernobyl, nor Fukushima, cities will NEVER have to be evacuated due to thermal plant malfunction, nor lands and seas hopelessly contaminated, nor human life cancerously irradiated.Face it, dollar for dollar, pound for pound, thermal plants have it all over
nuclear plants,utterly and completely, and in terms of the costs of human lives,livelihood and quality of life as well.Thermal is cheap,efficient, nuclear is the utter complete opposite,and is in no way shape nor form, in reality, in the truth of being on paper,on the financial balance sheet,financially justifiable.Thermal is the heaven, nuclear is the hell.Financially as well.

Secret Squirrel has discovered and even worse condition at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant,more serious than the melted down reactors,and that is the method of, and storage of, the spent fuel rods in the reactor plant,being above the reactors,and has learned Fukushima’s spent nuclear fuel rods are critically dangerous,in short where there’s smoke there’s fire.

Where there’s no containment, there’s radiation,and Fukushima has buildings virtually entirely blown away, all vastly open to the atmos.Buildings,which when they blew,due to the ignition of escaped hydrogen gas emitted by the damaged reactors,damaged,if not destroyed the fuel rod containment pools, and even yet having blown some,or many, of said rods entirely out of the building, and out of their pools where they lie strewn about,emitting ever increasing radiation, in the forms of gas,metals,oxides, and solid particles, highly radioactive ones, ever increasing as the uncooled rods now go to self re-criticality.Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, and such a fire is vastly worse,in terms of radiation, than the melted down reactors can produce,due to the enormous quantity of said fuel rods that were, and are,stored there.It all commences as any pool looses integrity due to various cause, the fuel bundles are exposed and then it starts,the zirconium cladding on the fuel rods bursts into flames if exposed to air for hours when a storage pool looses its water and also as heat rise internally in the rod of the nuclear materials,re-criticallity commences to chain,vast amounts of assorted radiation is released in various forms,all undesirable.Also as water in a given pool reduces, the temperature of the rods rises,the water boils, steams off, less water, and goes cyclical to dry and ever increasing re-criticality. Now study the situation as Squirrel sees it.Figures provided by the Tokyo Electric Power Company on Thursday show that most of the dangerous uranium at the powerplant is in the spent fuel rods, not the reactor cores.Here we ponder the words of TEPCO…The company said that a total of 11,195 spent fuel rod assemblies were stored at the site. That is about four times as much radioactive material as in the reactor cores combined…….the zirconium cladding on the fuel rods could burst into flames if exposed to air for hours when a storage pool lost its water Spent rods the biggest hazard, says Sydney Morning Herald, Keith Bradsher and Hiroko Tabuchi, March 19, 2011 YEARS of procrastination in deciding on long-term disposal of highly radioactive fuel rods from nuclear reactors are coming back to haunt Japanese authorities as they try to control fires and explosions at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station.

Some countries have tried to limit the number of spent fuel rods that accumulate at nuclear power plants: Germany stores them in costly casks, for example, and China sends them to a desert storage compound in the western province of Gansu.America has at one time also done this,but strangely abandonned this safer method of storage, if nuclear can be safe at all,or at least in a tiny bit. But Japan, like the United States, has kept ever-larger numbers of spent fuel rods in temporary storage pools at the powerplants, where they can be guarded with the same security provided for the plants.Obama even yet ordered,on achieving office,ordered the shutdown of an underground storage facility at Yucca Flats(Mountain),deep in the earth, troubled by greens dismayed at the thought of that,however Obama has angered Ganesha,The Elephant God, and others,and Obama may have lacked authority to have closed Yucca Mountain. And so, the US now stores the rods in the same fashion the Japanese do, mostly.Is he likely to reverse himself,at risk of irritating the greens and ordering it now reopened, by his command?Well magine,Vermont Yankee has a staggering 690 tons of spent fuel rods on site,you can imagine how much others have. All cooling water is gone from the spent-fuel pool at one of the crippled nuclear reactors in Japan, causing the release of high levels of radiation, Gregory Jaczko, chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, told members of Congress. Radioactivity has been heating the pools at three of the plant’s reactors since the plant’s cooling systems were disabled by a March 11 earthquake and tsunami, officials said.

Exposed, the spent fuel rods can catch fire and melt, spewing radiation into the atmosphere, said Robert Kelley, an engineer in Vienna who used to lead the Nuclear Emergency Response at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Unlike the plant’s reactors, the pools aren’t encased by steel and concrete. The pool water also shields workers. With the top of the fuel rods exposed, a worker at the pool lip would receive a fatal radiation dose in 16 seconds, David Lochbaum, a nuclear physicist for the Union of Concerned Scientists and a former NRC safety instructor, said in a conference call. Water in the spent fuel pool at the No. 4 reactor may be boiling, Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said on March 15. Temperatures in the rod-cooling pools of the shuttered No. 5 and No. 6 reactors rose as high as 63 degrees Celsius (145 degrees Fahrenheit) at 2 p.m. yesterday from 60 degrees Celsius at 7 a.m., a Tokyo Electric official said. Reactor pool No. 4 contains 142 tons of fuel that could burn on exposure to the atmosphere, Marvin Resnikoff, a nuclear physicist for Washington-based Physicians for Social Responsibility, said in a telephone press conference arranged by the group. He cited Tokyo Electric statements.

Japanese authorities are concerned about the condition of the pools of units 3 and 4, the International Atomic Energy Agency said yesterday. Military helicopters may be used to drop water on reactor No. 3 and workers are planning to spray water into unit 4, according to the IAEA. “This is going to be a problem for months,” Resnikoff said. “Water serves as both cooling and radiation shielding and workers can’t get close to it when the water is gone.” The pools contain enough radioactive cesium to make areas around the plant uninhabitable should it spread by fire and wind, Ira Helfand, a past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility. Whether contamination occurs remains to be seen, he said. The risk of the fuel ponds getting hot enough to start a nuclear reaction remains remote, said Geoff Parks, a nuclear engineer, also at the University of Cambridge. The pond would need to reach about 2,200 degrees Celsius, he said.

Science Insider noted yesterday: The Daiichi complex in Fukushima, Japan … had a total of 1760 metric tons of fresh and used nuclear fuel on site last year, according to a presentation by its owners, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco). The most damaged Daiichi reactor, number 3, contains about 90 tons of fuel, and the storage pool above reactor 4, which the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) Gregory Jaczko reported yesterday had lost its cooling water, contains 135 tons of spent fuel. The amount of fuel lost in the core melt at Three Mile Island in 1979 was about 30 tons; the Chernobyl reactors had about 180 tons when the accident occurred in 1986.According to Associated Press, there were – at the time of the earthquake and tsunami – 3,400 tons of fuel in seven spent fuel pools plus 877 tons of active fuel in the cores of the reactors.That totals 4,277 tons of nuclear fuel at Fukushima. Which means that there is almost 24 times more nuclear fuel at Fukushima than Chernobyl.If any of the spent fuel rods in the pools did indeed catch fire, nuclear experts say, the high heat would loft the radiation in clouds that would spread the radioactivity.

Here we see the worsening situation through

Excerpts start………….

“It’s worse than a meltdown,” said David A. Lochbaum, a nuclear engineer at the Union of Concerned Scientists who worked as an instructor on the kinds of General Electric reactors used in Japan. “The reactor is inside thick walls, and the spent fuel of Reactors 1 and 3 is out in the open.” Mr. Lochbaum, who formerly taught reactor operation for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said the pools measured about 40 feet long, 40 feet wide and 45 feet deep. The spent fuel, he added, rested at the pool’s bottom and rose no higher than 15 feet from the bottom.That means that in normal operations, the spent fuel is covered by about 30 feet of cooling water.Depending on the freshness of the spent fuel, Mr. Lochbaum said, the water in an uncooled pool would start to boil in anywhere from days to a week.

The water would boil off to a dangerous level in another week or two.Once most of the fuel is exposed, he said, it can catch fire.If the spent fuel is a few months old, most of the iodine 131 — one of the most dangerous radioactive byproducts in spent fuel — will have decayed into harmless forms.But the cesium 137 in the spent fuel has a half-life of 30 years, meaning it would take about two centuries to diminish its levels of radioactivity down to 1 percent.It is cesium 137 that still contaminates much land in Ukraine around the Chernobyl reactor, which suffered a meltdown in 1986. What happens to exposed spent fuel rods? The rods get so hot that the zirconium cladding catches fire. As the zirconium turns into zirconium oxide — another exothermic reaction — all the fission by-products inside the rods as well as any leftover uranium oxide and plutonium oxide will be exposed to the atmosphere. Given that the heat of the fire will cause convection, these by-products easily become an aerosol, enter the atmosphere, and disperse in the prevailing winds. What’s the immediate impact? The spent fuel releases a lot of radiation in the vicinity of the plant. What’s the impact over a broader area? The scenario of a high volume of airborne radioactive compounds entering the atmosphere is daunting.

Some emit gamma or beta radiation that the human body receives from outside. Some emit alpha particles, so they are dangerous if inhaled or ingested. Some like iodine are biologically absorbed (this is why potassium iodide tablets saturate your body with iodine and prevent uptake of the radioactive iodine isotope)Some like plutonium are chemically toxic in addition to being highly radioactive. Is this similar to Chernobyl? It’s not, in terms of how it began. But it could be, in terms of impact.Spent fuel is taken out of the reactor and replaced by new fuel. Nuclear power plants do this periodically—in some cases, every year. Once they are removed, however, spent nuclear fuel is very “hot and dirty”–it’s physically hot, but it also emits lots of nasty radiation. So you have to cool it in a special pool for 5 to 10 years to let the radioactivity fade. Pick your poison. Fresh fuel is hotter and more radioactive, but is only one fuel assembly. A pool of spent fuel will have dozens of assemblies. One report from Sankei News said that there are over 700 fuel assemblies stored in one pool at Fukushima. If they all caught fire, radioactive particles—including those lasting for as long as a decade—would be released into the air and eventually contaminate the land or, worse, be inhaled by people. “To me, the spent fuel is scarier. All those spent fuel assemblies are still extremely radioactive,” Dalnoki-Veress says. If the water that boils away cannot be replaced, the water level will drop, exposing the rods. The rods will begin to heat, which can lead to damage of the rod, or possibly a partial or complete meltdown . All of those consequences would lead to a release of radiation from the damaged rods. The amount released would depend on the severity of damage to the rods, the amount of spent fuel in the pool, and the length of time the rods have been in the pool.

Two of the radioactive gases released from fuel rods are iodine-131 and cesium-137. Because radioactive iodine-131 has a short half-life (eight days), it begins to decay quickly once the fuel is removed from the reactor core—so radiation releases from spent fuel will have much lower levels of iodine-131 than releases from the reactor core. However, cesium-137, which has a longer half-life (30 years), decays much more slowly, so levels will remain high in the spent fuel. Cesium-137 contamination from the Chernobyl accident was the main reason authorities had to establish an exclusion zone around that reactor. It is important to note that spent fuel pools are not as isolated from the environment as the reactor core, because the pools are located outside the primary containment structure. So even if the total amount of radiation released by damaged fuel rods in a spent fuel pool is less than that released by similarly damaged fuel rods in the reactor core, the fraction of that radiation that escapes into the atmosphere from the spent fuel pools is likely to be much higher. Since the net release into the air will be determined by the combination of these two factors—how much radiation is released by the fuel rods, and how much of that escapes into the environment— greater levels of radiation could result from the loss of cooling to a spent fuel pool than the loss of cooling to a reactor.

From images, 1 and 3 no longer have intact pools, in fact the rods are somewhere in the building wreckage, and also scattered round and about, merrily spewing radiation such as caesium etc…………… spent fuel rods pose grave danger, literally, as bad as and yet worse than, that of reactor core meldown,explosion………you see while they are less, there are enormously more,and they are much more dangerously volotile, in that simply exposing them causes then to catch fire, and melt……emitting enormous amounts of radiation gases and particles, particles including the Caesium, which is tremendously radiactive, remaining so for many many yet years……caesium has a half life of 30 years, meaning it’s radiation values decrease by half,but in terms of amounts.There are four kinds of isotopes that are likeliest to be emitted by the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant, as well as the other three that have been taken offline: iodine-131, cesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium-239. Iodine-131 is, in many ways, the most dangerous of the four, because it can lead to cancer — specifically thyroid cancer — in people exposed to it in the shortest time. Strontium and cesium are the next up the danger scale. While iodine tends to concentrate its damage to the thyroid, those two are not nearly so selective. “Strontium is chemicaly similar to calcium,” says Dr. Ira Helfand, a board member for Physicians for Social Responsibility. “So it gets incorporated into bones and teeth and can stay there, irradiating the body, for a long time.” Strontium is most commonly linked to leukemia.

More troubling, cesium and strontium linger not just in the body, but in the environment. Strontium has a half-life of 29 years; cesium’s is 30. A radioactive isotope is generally considered dangerous for 10 to 20 times its half life, which in these cases tops out at about 600 years. Most worrisome of all is plutonium-239 — for a number of reasons. First of all, the vast majority of a fuel rod is made of plutonium, which means there’s just more of it in play. What’s more, says Helfand, “It’s extraordinarily toxic.” Plutonium exposure usually comes from inhalation rather than ingestion, so it’s mostly associated with lung cancer. What’s more, plutonium’s half life is 24,000 years, which means anything released in Fukushima today could be around at dangerous levels for up to half a millon years.

Here we end selected excerpts……..

As to the less subtle effects, the much more immediate effects result when there is ………People exposed to 100 full rems begin to experience nausea, one of the first signs of radiation sickness. At 200 rems and up you suffer loss of hair, suppression of the immune system, vomiting and bleeding. A dose of 300 rems is fatal to about 50% of people exposed. At 600 rems, nobody survives. In some cases, the timing of the dosing matters. It’s much worse, for example, to absorb 300 rems in an hour than over the course of a year.Chernobyl cancers occurred in children because of the childhood growth process and dietary iodine deficienciesJapan has already, according to some estimates, released 50% of the amount of caesium-137 released by Chernobyl, and many experts say that the Fukushima plants will keep on leaking for months.And New Scientist reports that huge quantities of iodine-131 are being released in Japan: Six of the spent fuel rod pools are (or were) located at the top of six reactor buildings. One “common pool” is at ground level in a separate building.

Each “reactor top” pool holds up to 3450 fuel rod assemblies. The common pool holds up to 6291 fuel rod assemblies. [The common pool has windows on one wall which were almost certainly destroyed by the tsunami.] Each assembly holds sixty-three fuel rods. This means the Fukushima Daiichi plant may contain over 600,000 spent fuel rods. The fuel rods once stored atop reactor 3 may no longer be there: one of the several explosions at the Fukushima reactors may have damaged that pool.These pools are designed to store the intensively radioactive fuel rods that were already used in nuclear reactors. These “used” fuel rods still contain uranium (or in the case of fuel rods from reactor 3, they contain both uranium and plutonium from the MOX fuel used in that reactor).

In addition to the uranium and plutonium, the rods also contain other radioactive elements. These radioactive elements are created in the rods by the intense radiation around the rods when they are in the reactor core (before they are moved to the spent fuel pools).On average, spent fuel ponds hold five-to-ten times more long-lived radioactivity than a reactor core. Particularly worrisome is the large amount of cesium-137 in fuel ponds, which contain anywhere from 20 to 50 million curies of this dangerous radioactive isotope. With a half-life of 30 years, cesium-137 gives off highly penetrating radiation and is absorbed in the food chain as if it were potassium.These “used” fuel rods still contain uranium (or in the case of fuel rods from reactor 3, they contain both uranium and plutonium from the MOX fuel used in that reactor).

In addition to the uranium and plutonium, the rods also contain other radioactive elements.A single spent fuel pond holds more cesium-137 than was deposited by all atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in the Northern Hemisphere combined. These radioactive elements are created in the rods by the intense radiation around the rods when they are in the reactor core (before they are moved to the spent fuel pools),and are created when the spent fuel rises in temperature,or again takes part in a generated chain,in short,’re-criticality’ occurs- a nuclear chain reaction starts among fuel rods in the ever drying pool..Without enough water to cover the, the fuel rods will keep on igniting, just like trick birthday candles keep re-igniting after we blow them out. Just like trick birthday candles, the only way to put out the fuel rods is to put them under water. Unlike trick birthday candles, the spent fuel rods burn hot (3300 degrees F) enough so that the radioactive material in the rods is aerosolized,and particularized: carried into the atmosphere in clouds of hot smoke,strontium,uranium,plutonium,caesium and yet more. And unlike our trick birthday candles, the spent fuel rods in reactor building 4 are four stories off the ground – just like the other five reactor spent fuel pools at Fukushima. And unlike our trick birthday candles, the radioactivity around the spent fuel rods is so high that no one can approach them to put out the fire.

When the reactors blew, the pools were obviously disturbed, and in at least two instances, spent fuel was ejected from the pools,if not the pool entirely compromised, and lie round and about the area of the explosion, and in the explosion debris in the former reactor housing, Also the buildings are entirely compromised and hence the radioactive result from fuel rods not being cooled,is spreading round and about and in to the atmos.The Genie is out of the bottle and there is just no stuffing it back in.Radiation readings? Of course of stunning magnitude,else the workers could go in there, and we all know they simply can’t. As to the readings themselves, they,TEPCO,GE,the Japanese government, cannot in any way shape nor form be trusted to reveal the true readings and data on where the nuclear radiation is spreading or seeping in to.

As a metter of fact, strangely, on the other hand perhaps not, the Canadian government cannot be trusted, even with readings of the Japanese radiation cloud affecting and spreading to and into and through, Canada, as the Canadian Government has, incredibly,shut down their radiation monitoring system which is supposed to warn,inforn, and reveal the event. In short, the system specifically created for that use,has been shut down on orders of the Canadian Prime Minister, and government..useless thing to have isn’t it, all round.If it isn’t used, then without a doubt the equipment should be dismantled, and the people so employed in their evidently useless monitoring task,rendered redundant and unemployed. Buy a trustworthy geiger counter, and be your own monitor,your government is,in it’s greatest majority,utterly and completely useless to you.

Secret Squirrel noticed that they,TEPCO and The Government, said they were trying to save the Fukushima reactors, yes, save the reactors, ,save the reactors,that was what they said, they were trying to save to reactors…………not the people.Not the people, from the radiation spewing forth, contaminating,poisoning the earth, entering the water, inundating,invading, entering the very food they’d eat, the vegetables, and also the farm animals, the farm animals to be eaten for meat,cows,pigs and chickens et all, and the milk that they’d drink………..the reactor blew, we saw, the column, the white column, and…………the ring….the nuclear ring…….I imagine they’d prefer the heavenly term halo, for that is where the radiation so released, the caesium that comes from inside the reactors,comes from,that and when the meltdown,and so the Fukushima nuclear plant, turned Japan,and the life for the Japanese, in to a living Hell…..life under the Heavenly nuclear halo.There are claims that other reactors won’t do the same thing, as occurred in Japan, the reactor DID blow open, and spew radiation, and the dreaded poisonous, long lasting cesium in to the air and round and about, and it to the water and in to the soil, and in to the food,animal and vegetable,and on to the people.They say that other reactors won’t do that,they’re encased, but the Japanese ones haven’t been encased, and we have to ask why they weren’t, when encased ones were being built at the same time,by the same source designers, with safety in mind, as they were in Japan, as they are in Japan. They say the encased ones won’t blow open.Well, place a stick of dynamite on a stump,light it, it blows, but that’s about it, negligible damage to the stump. Place the same stick of dynamite on the stump, light it, cover it with a can, and it can and will obliterate the stump.The containment of an explosive release at the moment of explosion, concentrates, and magnifies many times the blast. The encased concrete reactor is safe?Chernobyl blew a 2000 TON metal lid, right off and up,enormously in to the air, releasing the radiation, and poisonous caesium in to the air, and in to the water, and in to the soil and in to the food, and on to the people,and it remains for many many years.

They released radioactive steams in to the air, with associated radioactive particles.They said they were containing the water they were pouring on to the reactors, which was becoming horrifically radioactive, and they found humungous amounts of radiation in the sea, where it was contaminating and entering,the fish, which as you know live beneath the surface of the water.Amazing! There it is, think now,ponder, assess.And where did that humungous amount come from?Well, they seemed to indicate thence, the small leaks? Or were they lying, TEPCO, AND The Government……….and just releasing it all willy nilly in to the sea.They DID show imagines of a leak, they said was the source,but notice it is a rather small crack, a very small crack……so.then the smallest crack can release a massive quantity of radiation in to the water to contaminate the sea,the fish,and render them, unsafe to eat,unless you wish to risk death,in the short term, and cancerous death in the long,slow term.

Well, you know the effects of radiation in the short term, the burns(recall the workers were burned by contact with radioactive water,they told you that much it was found out when the made it to hospital),you know the effects of radiation, the hair falling out,etc etc etc.But what is a cancerous death due to radiation, in the long slow term,the very slow term.Well, I know,you see when I was ten, they had these “phosporous” glow in the dark material on watches,and, what should happen, but one of these tiny balls fell off somebodies watch, the girl, in front of me, picked it up and swallowed it, just like candy.Well, I told her that wasn’t such a good idea.On it went, I encountered her in high school, she complained of frequent stomach aches,I knew what from, that radioactive tiny ball was stuck in there.I encountered her again, 30 years after, in hospital,she had stomach cancer, a mass
had grown over the years.She died, slowly,painfully.Yes, there it was, the tiny round glow in the center of the mass,I told them, they found it,there it was, the cause of death…………cancer of course, but a cancer induced by that radioactive tiny ball that had lodged in her stomach, triggered the cells to surround it and try protect the body, and then mutate to cancerous cells, and
cancer, due to the effects of the radiation,death forty years later,due to a tiny radioactive ball, and something not that massively radioactive, just trapped, within the body, sitting there,emitting it’s tiny level of radioactivity,to the cells it rested on,was lodged on.That’s what it does,that’s how it happens, and that’s what it will do, and is doing, to the Japanese, and anybody else, who ingests the materials, or inhales the materials.The nuclear particles from the nuclear plant, are higher levels
than that tiny ball, even yet they being so very much smaller,but so very much yet more,radioactive.

If TEPCO, and The Government,had THEY not lied to the people of Japan, if they had not tried to ridiculously save the reactors, far less Japanese would have suffered,and WILL suffer, the effects and fates similar, as expounded immediately preceding.What you have read above is the shape of things to come for a great many of the Japanese who lived close to the reactors,who will eat the food,animal and vegetable, who will eat the fish,who breathed in and swallowed and/or inhaled, the radioactive particles spewed forth by the reactor plant’s explosions and radioactive water leaks.We salute you, you who are about to die, slowly, you
who suffered the TEPCO,The Government,The Nuclear Lie.

Secret Squirrel has found,on investigation,that while nuclear advocates tell us nuclear is safe, we obviously have ourselves learned that it isn’t,and will adversely affect the human bodies it lands on,or is inhaled by,burning,mutilating,mutating,killing,diseasing,quickly,or slowly,and similarly the farm animals in and after the same fashion, and thence also landing on farm soils,where it will and does and is, coating vegetables and farm animals which will be in contact with and ,eaten by humans, where it will cause yet more significant damage over a period of time after ingestion,even yet reaching in to the next generation.Many of us now look at what has been made public,specifically Chernobyl, and from Fukushima,ongoing, with obviously much of the reality hidden from the public by the nuclear agency involved and the Japanese government itself. Other disasters went before, and the radiation and its effects were hidden from the public by governments best described as draconian.So what are the general effects of radiation of a population, on the human body?Well….

(1) Hair

The losing of hair quickly and in clumps occurs with radiation exposure at 200 rems or higher.

(2) Brain

Since brain cells do not reproduce, they won’t be damaged directly unless the exposure is 5,000 rems(rems/rads equate) or greater. Like the heart, radiation kills nerve cells and small blood vessels, and can cause seizures and immediate death.

(3) Thyroid

The certain body parts are more specifically affected by exposure to different types of radiation sources. The thyroid gland is susceptible to radioactive iodine. In sufficient amounts, radioactive iodine can destroy all or part of the thyroid. By taking potassium iodide, one can reduce the effects of exposure.

(4) Blood System

When a person is exposed to around 100 rems, the blood’s lymphocyte cell count will be reduced, leaving the victim more susceptible to infection. This is often referred to as mild radiation sickness. Early symptoms of radiation sickness mimic those of flu and may go unnoticed unless a blood count is done.According to data from Hiroshima and Nagaski, show that symptoms may persist for up to 10
years and may also have an increased long-term risk for leukemia and lymphoma.

(5) Heart

Intense exposure to radioactive material at 1,000 to 5,000 rems would do immediate damage to small blood vessels and probably cause heart failure and death directly.

(6) Gastrointestinal Tract

Radiation damage to the intestinal tract lining will cause nausea, bloody vomiting and diarrhea. This is occurs when the victim’s exposure is 200 rems or more. The radiation will begin to destroy the cells in the body that divide rapidly. These including blood, GI tract, reproductive and hair cells, and harms their DNA and RNA of surviving cells.

(7) Reproductive Tract

Because reproductive tract cells divide rapidly, these areas of the body can be damaged at rem levels as low as 200. Long-term, some radiation sickness victims will become sterile.

So Fukushima presents a medical problem of very large dimensions. Events have proven this observation to be true despite the nuclear industry’s campaign about the “minimal” health effects of so-called low-level radiation. That billions of its dollars are at stake if the Fukushima event causes the “nuclear renaissance” to slow down appears to be evident from the industry’s attacks on its critics, even in the face of an unresolved and escalating disaster at the reactor complex at Fukushima.

There are differences between external and internal radiation,the former being what populations were exposed to when the atomic bombs were detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945; their profound and on-going medical effects are well documented.

Internal radiation, on the other hand, emanates from radioactive elements which enter the body by inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. Hazardous radionuclides such as iodine-131, caesium 137, and other isotopes currently being released in the sea and air around Fukushima bio-concentrate at each step of various food chains (for example into algae, crustaceans, small fish, bigger fish,
then humans; or soil, grass, cow’s meat and milk, then humans).  After they enter the body, these elements – called internal emitters – migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, where they continuously irradiate small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years, can induce uncontrolled cell replication – that is, cancer. Further, many of the nuclides remain radioactive in the environment for generations, and ultimately will cause increased incidences of cancer and genetic diseases over time.

The US National Academy of Sciences BEIR VII report has concluded, no dose of radiation is safe, however small, including background radiation; exposure is cumulative and adds to an individual’s risk of developing cancer.Chernobyl,1986, a 2009 report, “Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment”, published by the New York Academy of Sciences, three scientist authors – Alexey V Yablokov, Vassily B. Nesterenko, and Alexey V Nesterenko  They
estimate the number of deaths attributable to the Chernobyl meltdown at about 980,000.

In the early days of nuclear power, WHO (World Health Organization) issued forthright statements on radiation risks such as its 1956 warning: “As experts, we affirm that the health of future generations is threatened by increasing development of the atomic industry and sources of radiation … We also believe that new mutations that occur in humans are harmful to them and their offspring.”Genetic, or heritable effects appear in the future generations of the exposed person as a result of radiation damage to the reproductive cells. Genetic effects are abnormalities that may occur in the future generations of exposed individuals. They have been extensively studied in plants and animals, but risks for genetic effects in humans are seen to be considerably smaller than the risks for somatic effects.Delayed somatic effects are those that may occur years after radiation doses are received. Among the delayed effects thus far observed have been an increased potential for the development of cancer and cataracts. Since some
forms of cancer are among the most probable delayed effects, the established dose limits were formulated with this risk in mind.Prompt somatic effects are those that occur soon after an acute dose (typically 10 rad or greater to the whole body in a short period of time). One example of a prompt effect is the temporary hair loss which occurs about three weeks after a dose of 400 rad to the scalp. New hair is expected to grow within two months after the dose, although the color and texture may be different.This
we’ve learned from benevolent anticancer therapies,however in the cases of nuclear reactors,those close to the plant and it’s accident who’ve suffered these effects, have died.Even the lower doses of radiation, can and do result in, cataracts.Subtle doses have effects,over generations, and also, in the rather emmidate, pre-natla for example, the effects on the child pregnant females carry……..effects associated with prenatal radiation doses include:

Growth retardation,

Small head/brain size

Mental retardation

Childhood cancer

Larger doses,do more,faster,and are not very subtle in changes and effects on the humans,the human body that is,An acute radiation dose is defined as a large dose (10 rad or greater, to the whole body) delivered during a short period of time (on the order of a few days at the most). If large enough, it may result in effects which are observable within a period of hours to weeks.

Acute doses can cause a pattern of clearly identifiable symptoms (syndromes). These conditions are referred to in general as Acute Radiation Syndrome. Radiation sickness symptoms are apparent following acute doses >100 rad.

Acute whole body doses of >450 rad may result in a statistical expectation that 50% of the population exposed will die within 60 days without medical attention.

As in most illnesses, the specific symptoms, the therapy that a doctor might prescribe, and the prospects for recovery vary from one person to another and are generally dependent on the age and general health of the individual.

Blood-forming organ (Bone marrow) syndrome (>100 rad) is characterized by damage to cells that divide at the most rapid pace (such as bone marrow, the spleen and lymphatic tissue). Symptoms include internal bleeding, fatigue, bacterial infections, and fever.

Gastrointestinal tract syndrome (>1000 rad) is characterized by damage to cells that divide less rapidly (such as the linings of the stomach and intestines). Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, electrolytic imbalance, loss of digestion ability, bleeding ulcers, and the symptoms of blood-forming organ syndrome.

Central nervous system syndrome (>5000 rad) is characterized by damage to cells that do not reproduce such as nerve cells. Symptoms include loss of coordination, confusion, coma, convulsions, shock, and the symptoms of the blood forming organ and gastrointestinal tract syndromes. Scientists now have evidence that death under these conditions is not caused by actual radiation damage to the
nervous system, but rather from complications caused by internal bleeding, and fluid and pressure build-up on the brain

Other effects from an acute dose include:

200 to 300 rad to the skin can result in the reddening of the skin (erythema), similar to a mild sunburn and may result in hair loss due to damage to hair follicles.

125 to 200 rad to the ovaries can result in prolonged or permanent suppression of menstruation in about fifty percent (50%) of women.

600 rad to the ovaries or testicles can result in permanent sterilization.

50 rad to the thyroid gland can result in benign (non cancerous) tumors.

Well now, let’s go on to a more appetizing aspect of nuclear radiation……..the WHO says the impact of radiation on food depends on the type of food and exposed soil type, and amount of exposure and the amount of food consumed.The food experts from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture,on of whom is Dr. Ir Nuri Andarwulan, MSI states, the food is exposed to radioactive nuclear can loose all required nutrients, can even become toxic to the body such that it endangers health.Nuri explained, nuclear radiation can

produce two parts, namely radioactive rays and radioactive compounds. “If food is exposed to radioactive rays, can damage the

existing compounds in food. For example, the compound of vitamins in foods can be whole, or even that there are other compounds in

foods can be toxic to the body,” he said when contacted VIVAnews, Wednesday, March 30, 2011.While the food is exposed to

radioactive compounds, Nuri added that its effects can be deadly if consumed. “It also depends on which body part is exposed. For

example, iodine, is one radioactive compound can attack the thyroid and can cause thyroid cancer.”

Radiation in particular affects the unborn also, and extremely.This can occur when the mother’s abdomen is exposed to radiation

from outside her body. Also, a pregnant woman who accidentally swallows or breathes in radioactive materials may absorb that

substance into her bloodstream. From the mother’s blood, radioactive materials may pass through the umbilical cord to the baby or

concentrate in areas of the mother’s body near the womb (such as the urinary bladder) and expose the fetus to radiation.Fetuses are

particularly sensitive to radiation during their early development, between weeks 2 and 18 of pregnancy. The health consequences
can be severe, even at radiation doses too low to make the mother sick. Such consequences can include stunted growth, deformities,

abnormal brain function, or cancer that may develop sometime later in life.Unborn babies are especially sensitive to the

cancer-causing effects of radiation.Such damaging exposure can be directly,or else through ingestion of radiation through food and

or water by the mother,affecting both her, and the child,much more so,the child.

Radioactive fallout comes from radioactive materials accidentally released into the atmosphere, such as from nuclear power plant

accidents,explosions, release of gases,release of cooling and or other waters. Prevailing winds and water fall can contain radioactive waste and isotopes, leading to the deposit of these materials in places far from the accident,on persons,on soil,on vegetation,on food vegetables,on cattle and barnyard animals. The radiation is then deposited and absorbed by vegetation and grains used to feed animals for human consumption, as well as on fruits, vegetables and grain products used to feed humans, according.

Consuming radioactive materials can cause damage to your body. The European Food Safety Authority, or EFSA, states that the more soluble uranium is, the greater danger to the body upon exposure from food and water. Half-life of uranium in the body can last as long as 360 days, which means you still have uranium in your body long after your exposure to it.The World Health Organization states that absorption of uranium from foods is low, with 98 percent being excreted from your body unabsorbed and eliminated through feces. Uranium may accumulate in your nervous system, but according to WHO, firm conclusions can’t be drawn as the results are conflicting on the damage done to nerves from radiation exposure. The United States Environmental Protection Agency,however,states that ingested uranium from food and water can lead to kidney damage and cancer. This isn’t due to the radioactivity of uranium but rather the toxic nature of the metal itself. Also, uranium found in your urine can still be traced inside your body for months after ingestion or exposure.

Face it, whether you’re holding it,breathing it,or ingesting it, radiation is just not safe for you.It WILL cause you damage,and in fact, through you, your as yet unborn children, or yet those who are in the process of getting there if you’re a pregnant female.It damages,mutate, and kills, and you have no choice in the matter, the course of events for you will be determined by the exposure you receive from the nuclear accident,no matter what you local nuclear authority, or government tell you,their words are most often neither truth, and most definitely not a ridiculous shield for you from radiation’s effects,the effects of radiations spewing,exploding, leaking out of, their nuclear plants, plants they want there,as they say, for your won good.Such is their benevolence,such is their malevolence.Radioactivity, is a maiming,mutilating,killer, slow killer due to the cancers it induces, a painful,ever torturing killer,brought to you by your government.They’ll be the death of you, eventually,the horrible,horrific
death, nuclear death,a long slow painful death,and if you don’t die, you’ll wish you had, or perhaps, you’ll wish you’d never have been born. The Russian suffered,the Japanese suffer, soon too you will suffer……….it’s coming for you, it’s going to happen,your happening.

Secret Squirrel has noticed that there is a study which claims that nuclear energy is the safest way to generate electricity…………balderdash,falderall, friends of theirs, those and the mentally disturbed, the insane,as a matter of fact I use those who support nuclear as my measure of insanity,anyone else can at the most be a little bit fruity with regards to anything and everything else.

In Japan, there is radioactivity in the soil, the food is contaminated,you cannot eat the spinach, nor broccoli, nor anything else in that LARGE region, you cannot drink the water, you cannot eat the beef,the cows are contaminated and everything else in terms of edible farm animals,ground water is contaminated, miles away.There is radioactivity in the seawater at massive levels, contaminating the fish and rendering them unconsumable.The radiation cloud has been detected, in Canada,in the USA, in Scotland, Britain,Ireland, and again in Sweden which first detected what turned out to be Chernobyl.

Speaking of Chernobyl, the Japanese plant explosions,fires,radiation leaks, is yet many times less.So what is it all from? A meltdown? No they claim it’s only a partial meltdown on one reactor…..hooray, thankfully it wasn’t a full meltdown..of even one, yes it WOULD be worse, as logic dictates, then there’s explosion, which they said didn’t occur, but it can and may, it did at Chernobyl, and that is even yet worse,as has been proven, and as logic dictates.What have they said?It’s many times less than Chernobyl.

What was Chernobyl?Well,it was the worst nuclear accident to date was the Chernobyl disaster which occurred in 1986 in Ukraine. That accident killed 56 people directly, and caused an estimated 4,000 additional cases of fatal cancer, as well as damaging approximately $7 billion of property. Radioactive fallout from the accident was concentrated in areas of Belarus, Ukraine and Russia. Approximately 350,000 people were forcibly resettled away from these areas soon after the incident. Recent estimations say that between 400,000 and 500,000 inhabitants (when including unborn children) near Kiev province had been exposed to a comparatively high dose of radiation, and there’s a possibility of developing cancer, leukemia and DNA malformation in the next 10 to 40 years……..What did and do they say?Chernobyl cannot happen again………….what will they say in Japan? It a
Fukushima cannot happen again?

There HAVE been other major and massive events……

October 1957

Fire destroyed the core of a plutonium-producing reactor at Britain’s Windscale nuclear complex – since renamed Sellafield –

sending clouds of radioactivity into the atmosphere. An official report said the leaked radiation could have caused dozens of

cancer deaths in the vicinity of Liverpool.
Winter 1957-’58

A serious accident occurred during the winter of 1957-58 near the town of Kyshtym in the Urals. A Russian scientist who first

reported the disaster estimated that hundreds died from radiation sickness.

October 5, 1966

The core of an experimental reactor near Detroit, Mich., melted partially when a sodium cooling system failed.

March 28, 1979

Near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, America’s worst nuclear accident occurred. A partial meltdown of one of the reactors forced the evacuation of the residents after radioactive gas escaped into the atmosphere.

You can compare, the events are beyond compare……and the effects, and effects on the public……….hidden.And there is a study which says nuclear energy is the safest way to generate electricity.But it is the government who dictates,it is the government  who dictates the nuclear plants,and it is the government who did
dictate the nuclear plants, and who claim they aren’t responsible for the failures and accidents concerning nuclear plants,the explosions, the fires, the releases of radiations.well they aren’t responsible,they can’t possibly be,they claim it is the
electorate who are responsible,regardless of their decisions, we have yet to have responsible governments, only governments of idiocy,stupidity,cretinism, imbecillity,ignorance et all.And the study,claims that nuclear energy is the safest way to generate electricity. Numerous cities within a 20km radius, had to be evacuated, due to the presence of radiation and hazards which proved to be true. Chernobyl was even yet worse. Who can calculate now the dead and dying from the effects of radiation from these areas,those who will suffer cancerous growths, and deaths, and their children horrific mutations……….and the study says that nuclear energy is the safest way to generate electricity.Well, coal and oil and gas fired thermal plants don’t cause all this to happen when something happens internally to them, nor does it happen to geothermal, nor to hydroelectric energy
generation, nor to stored storage types of electrical generation system,and wind power.The study claims that nuclear energy is the  safest way to generate electricity.Chernobyl,Pripyat, still empty and abandoned,radiation rained down on it, and it is still in the soil…….the area bout Fukushima…evacuated, radiation rained down on it, and it is still in the soil.The cost of nuclear energy is quite high,extremely high, far too high.Who’s paying for the evacuated people,who’s going to pay for the farmers and their lost livelihood,the crops and animals, the fishermen and their lost livelihood, the closed and abandoned businesses,who’s going to pay for the health lost to those affected by the radiation,who’s going to pay for their mutated children,who’s going to pay for what can’t ever be replaced, who’s going to pay for human life?

In Canada,Toronto,the largest population city in that nation,  is 17 miles from the Pickering Reactor group.Where will the Canadian government evacuate them to.Will it evacuate them anywhere?Will it simply tell them get out of town? More than likely just the latter, there will be NO help from them, from their governments,they will tell them that when they voted for them, they voted for nuclear, and they will tell them that as THEY are forced to evacuate wherever they can and may.The people will be left to fend for themselves…..the people of Toronto.The massive numbers of people in hospitals will be left.Canada has not the capability to evacuate a city the size of Toronto,not even yet those in hospitals,old peoples homes etc., and so too it is for the rest of you near nuclear plants.You will be on your own and
told to leave,as they did in Japan…..all they will tell you is…….that’s all folks.The politicians will be taken care of,unquestionably.But not you.
And the study claims that nuclear energy is the safest way to generate electricity.

Secret Squirrel has turned his attention to the problems with volcanoes,ozone layer depletion,fog,smog,adverse rain conditions,flood conditions, pub(bar)brawling, beatings, stabbings, and the increasing problem of nuclear radiation escaping from nuclear plants in the process of melting down,exploding, or just generally leaking vast amounts of radiation,and has come up with his own line of clothing which will effectively and properly haberdash the British gentlemen and/or ladies for the
ridiculous conditions of the dangers of the day being faced by all.Squirrel has engineered a clothing design to solve all the problems and conditions faced by Englishmen, and women, in everyday life in Britain.Designing, under the selected and private name of,Sasquatchi, here is the solution in the proper clothing to be worn,clothing for the man for all seasons, by the man for all seasons,a suit of clothing designed for all seasons,and all reason,clothing by Sasquatchi.

Firstly we will start with the head, and there shall be placed a lamp,a miner’s lamp specifically, equipped with a fog light element as well, so here we have a fully steerable lighting,which move with the head so is constantly outputing a
useful beam of illumination, thus thrusting back the darkness, and also, penetrating any fog which might be present.

Now, Englishmen are known for stiff upper lips, but we’ll give’em some more backbone, as to combat,deflect,divert
safely away, all rain and the cancerous damaging sun which now reigns down on us all as the ozone layer depletes(due to volcanoes and various other effects), up the back, shall be a brolley,bumbershoot as it were(this is an umbrella in American).It shall there for also provide backbone,spines, for the spineless. and in the field of orthopedics, prevent curvatures of the spine.Rain or shine, the properly haberdashered Englishman,and woman, will be properly protected. Indeed, what with the sudden onsets of these huge drafts of cold and snow brought about in England by the scientific explaination of global warming,the proper and full kit will and should include, heatable knickers,also equipped with suitable fart filtration to prevent contributions being made to global warming which will and would only worsen these winterlike global warming effects.

Now for the visage and protection of the lungs from the effects of volcanic ash(recall we’re now told to stay indoors due to this effect),we shall have a gas mask,this filters out all poisonous gases,particles,malodours,gaseous effects
of fogs, and also the gas mask will have polarized anti-uv, anti glare coating.Now this does not have to be in use all the time, so the gas mask can be carried as it was during the War,in a suitable pouch by the side ready for use.Cheap rate suits
will simply come with a limited supply of surgical masks and a pair of sunglasses. The gas mask is preferred as it deals much better with everyday problems such as sudden malodorous farts as may be encountered on the omnibus,underground,aircraft etc.

For the problem what with stabbings,beating,pub brawls etc, we shall return to the standard gentlemens suit of iron pantsed armour as it were, in short, it’s back to the tin suit, properly tailor made.We feel it’s best go with the best, but a cheap rate will incorporate a somewhat similar kevlar suit.I encourage actors to wear this as a deterent to beatings,stabbings,shootings etc and various other demonstrations and manifestations as might occur by those incensed with
their bad acting.As an added plus, this will help protect against a sudden pub visit by a burka clad person, some of which are known to have sudden explosive personalities,the metal and kevlar proving a deterent to shrapnels,explosion blast and also the blood and guts of the exploding personage.

Now what with the ever increasing nuclear accidents,and incidents,and disasters, such as the Three Mile Islands,the Chernobyls,the Fukushimas,et all and whatever, which keep occurring, with the release of massive amounts of radiation, the tin
suit shall be made from an alloyed tin and lead,which will and shall protect the wearer from the effects of nuclear radiations,whilst at the same time providing the strength required for pub visits.

Now how will we deal with flooding,sudden flash or otherwise floods,which are predictably occurring in Britain these years and so move the properly haberdashed English gentlemen or lady about safely in flood conditions. Well,
we will incorporate,what we have seen in Japan,a suitable over pulled a kayak pants.This will fit nicely over the tin suit, and/or kevlar and alloyed lead radiation protection.Indeed this is a self inflating pants which turns in to a
kayak,as demonstrated in Japan, and so is most suitable to flood conditions.The cheap rate version will simply incorporate a suitable rubber ring,similar to an inflatable attached inner tube, it is one actually, and for the ladies we will use the suitable highly decorated pool rings in keeping with fashion trends.The ladies have a trendy,fashionable and optional inflating bra,worn on the outside, Madonna fashion, and these inflatable boobies will additionally inflate to help save one in
conditions of extreme flooding. Of course, men could conceivably wear one,but then one might be lumped in to the trendy by bohemian category Elton John and David Bowie find themselves in,men may or may not find this suitable. However, it is also
mentioned that while these inflatable boobies could be blown up in case of flooding emergency, in everyday use, they could be filled with beer,wine,liquor, and the inflating tube then becoming a liquor fill and feeding tube as required. In event of sudden flooding one had best consume,imbibe as it were, the beverage quickly so as to be able to utilize the inflating abilities for the developing flood emergency. Listening to government flood warning could clue one in as to when an emergency  imbibation is necessary to ready the device for flood inflations.

And,indeed, yes, a children’s line will also be available! There the gas masks will sport the faces of the likes of Mickey Mouse,Daffy Duck,Goofy(that’d be for a future politician,),etc,(as they were in Britain during WWII), and their floatation rings would be a suitable pool swimming ring,in keeping with the rules of children’s fashions.Japanese businessmen in keeping with their good time boys nature,going cheap rate here in similar fashion, could go with The Swan,though the appearance of same at office parties may be frowned upon by their upper management.

There is an added plus for the American line, the tin/lead/kevlar suit would sport a ball and chain,detachable, to help keep Americans down in events of tornadoes,this being detachable for flood events so as to not weigh the wearer down.This could also be worn by known future victims of organized crime rubouts so’s not to make trouble as they exit this world, conveiniently and cooperatively being ready for a trip to sleep with the dead fish.I understand the mob is merciful to those who cooperate with them.

Problems solved!All problems solved!! And so too, the day of the Squirrel Suit will see the light of day on the fashion runways of the world,Squirrel,designing under the selected name of Sasquatchi, a name soon to be as famous as that of Yves St.Laurent and Armani, in the fashion world!

Sasquatchi suits all!!

Secret Squirrel,
MRL,(MP,Dunny On The Wold),
Minister For Re-Deranged Re-Engineering.

Secret Squirrel has pondered the ever increasing nuclear radiation dilemma, as we’ve been made terribly aware by the Russian openness concerning Chernobyl,the greatest known atomic radiation accident, versus the virtual,by comparison, quiet of the Japanese concerning their Fukushima.

Ah yes, one recalls the expression of nuclear plants variously exploding and spewing out vast qautities of mutating radiation,as nuclear authorities and governments liked to tell us,would occur,using the term,”When pigs fly!” Well, flying pigs have been seen,throughout the history of nuclear, at Chalk River,Calder Hall,Chernobyl, Three Mile Isand,Fukushima (and believe you me you and I are also getting Fuked),and ,of course, many other places, at other dates and times,carefully ignored,and hidden from public view generally.Yes, no doubt the pigs were flying to market having been made more intelligent by the radiation effects,unquestionably given the ability to fly due to the massive radiation levels and accompanying genetic mutational effects.Unterestingly, a team of scientists has tracked down the genetic mutation that leads to blue eyes. The mutation occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago,due to the effects of higher radiation levels, so before then, there were no blue eyes. Those who have green eyes,are continuations of the mutation, or in other words second generation retards.
Indeed,yes, imagine the increased development of,and occurrence of, hump backs,no doubt generated by nature,as it were,Mother Nature, a place to store more water so we can, and could, go longer distances without the necessity for water.Indeed there is massive mutation occurring in the children of Chernobyl,,9 times higher than those not exposed, and it’s not JUST cancer,cancerous growths,either, it’s bodily mutations, similar to the effects of thalidomide, and also other major bodilydeformities.The Japanese are terribly aware of this having been the victims of the American atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Imagine, the radiation mutating our veggies, one recalls,as I do,the experimental paper, The Effects of Radiation On Man In

The Moon Marigolds,indeed,yes, imagine the veggies becoming more……….err……mutated,altered, than the presently genetically engineered are…….yes,imagine feet,for example, the radiation could mutate them and eventually they would have feet.We could call our tomatoes in for supper,or whatever! Indeed, yes, but I think perhaps we’d best avoid the cucumbers and zucchinis. Bending over in the garden could put on at hazard,rather like a child bending over in front of Roman Polanski.

Imagine yet also people commencing to glow from it.They could stand at street corners at night,glowing, t’is all so very terribly green,you know ,save on electricity, eh whot!They could be waiters in the ever popular Glow In The Dark Restaurants. We could take some home, keep’em in the closet till needed,closeted as it were, then out’em,and have a useable workable light, won’t burn out………….Everready, oh dear that name’s in use, oh well we’ll think of another.Imagine, if pigs glow green it’s easier for farmers to find them at night.Fish with three eyes?Well now, much easier to escape larger predator fish! Win!Win!Win!All round.

In Hollywood what with such bad acting, Kevlar lined suits are the rage but,you, not being actors, if I offer you only one tip for the future, radiation suits, would be it.The long-term benefits of heavy, lead-laden radiation suits have been proved in nuclear power plants everywhere,for the time they do protect.Of course, the suits do have a vision visor, which is the Chink in it’s armour(that, and they’re mostly made in China,Okally Dokeally).But trust me on the radiation suits.But,indeed,yes,mutations could in fact be a good thing, after all the mutations would be,and are, alive you know, that would be ,and is,life, as they know it.They constantly look for life out in space and imagine that as life not as we know it,but as it is.

Who knows too, perhaps women will develop three breasts,what the heck!Now that’s another good point to radiation mutation! And so, what with nuclear plants, nuclear explosions, escape of nuclear radiation,nuclear clouds spreading across nations,oceans, infesting land, sea, air, water,food……….why it’s an all rounder then,a  Jolly Good Show.

Secret Squirrel has discovered that the fat controllers at several Germanic speaking European nations TV channels have banned episodes of The Simpsons that contain jokes about atomic energy,about  nuclear meltdown,and radiation and it’s effects. They want to stop the hit cartoon poking fun at nuclear danger during the battle to save the earthquake and tsunami-hit Fukushima plant, reports the Daily Star,an yet other papers round and about the world.

The bungling Homer Simpson works at disaster-prone Springfield Nuclear Power Plant,where safety regulations are notoriously slack,he works as a Nuclear Safety Inspector, and constantly falls asleep and neglects his duties, run by money-grabbing Mr Burns, in the hit show. It is a running joke about safety at the plant, that has blown up or come close to meltdown several times.The Beer-swilling Homer,the Nuclear Safety Inspector, repeatedly puts the town at risk by neglecting his duties and
falling asleep. He even casually tosses away a radioactive rod he finds in his clothes during the hit show’s title sequence.

Episodes of The Simpsons which feature jokes about nuclear meltdowns have been banned in a number of countries – as a reaction to the disaster currently unfolding in Japan.German channel Pro7 was the first to act, vowing to screen footage from the popular cartoon series to make sure episodes which make light of nuclear crisis’ are not aired for the time being.

Austria’s ORF and Switzerland’s SF networks have also done the same.ORF has used the most extreme censorship so far, banning a total of eight episodes until a review at the end of April, according to the Hollywood Reporter.They’ve even banned an episode which features scientists Marie and Pierre Curie dying of radiation poisoning and another which has jokes about a nuclear meltdown are among those that have been cut.

It mirrors  Germanic governmental megalomanic styles of attempts at indoctrination,in efforts to protect government supplied views that nuclear is safe.Yes – that will fix the toxic,  radioactive clouds emanating from Fukushima,clouds that spread not only over Japan, but round and about the world,clouds that poison and mutate people,and future generations of people, the children, the babies,yes,that will fix the radioactivity in the soil, in the food, in the water, in the fish, and that too will prevent recurrence,prevent nuclear plant explosions, meltdowns,yes that will prevent the Three Mile Islands, that will prevent the Chernobyls,the public will feel safe and will believe the government lie, the government lie that nuclear is safe,their Nuclear no-d’oh.

Merkel:Look in to my eyes,have I ever lied or hidden the truth from you before! You know you cannot see nuclear radiation, it does not exist, there is no such thing as a nuclear plant meltdown,you do not know about such things.Nuclear is good for you.Trust me….and you may not watch The Simpsons.

Secret Squirrel asks, “Are you told nuclear energy is safe?”Yes.You’re told that, but is nuclear energy actually safe?………………No.We know so.We are lied to, constantly,by government, whenever it is convenient for it to carry out it’s agenda and defend and protect itself,from truth honesty and justice, which, face it, occurs much more often than not,especially with respect to nuclear energy.It lies, government lies.

Yet another of the nuclear industry’s dirty little secrets is now out. Spent nuclear fuel pools are for more lethal than the reactor core or a nuclear bomb and they do not have any containment what so ever.The government’s say they’re safe, and have been safe,but Japan is proving they are not,certainly and most decidedly not.Both the reactor and the fuel pond, are highly unstable,vulnerable,and seemingly unaccountably uncontrollable.The Japanese plant at present is generating a three year dose of radiation per /hour at the gate.

Here from the German, Speigel Online…”After the earthquake and tsunami in Japan followed by the ever-worsening stream of terrible news relating to the country’s nuclear power facilities, even the last remaining advocates of the technology must realize that we can’t go on like this. It is over. Done. Finished. Nuclear energy cannot be controlled by humans, no matter how good the arguments might be in its favour. The danger of disaster is real, and it can happen at any time – even in a super high-tech country such as Japan. And it could also happen here( in Germany). A sense of security when it comes to atomic reactors is no longer possible. Not anywhere.”On December 12, 1952, the NRX reactor,Chalk River,Ottawa,Canada, suffered a partial meltdown,due to operator and mechanical error.

Ridiculously serious nuclear “accidents” occurred at Windscale in 1957, at Three Mile Island(mechanical and operator error) in 1979,and at Chernobyl(operator error) in 1986 are well known.Some remain to be described. Others such as the releases from the Hanford site in Washington State where eight reactors were built to produce military plutonium between 1943 and 1971 have been disclosed in the United States using Freedom of Information Act provisions.

In February 1986, 19,000 pages of documents were
released on the application of the Hanford Education Action League. They learned that clouds of radioactive iodine, ruthenium, caesium and other elements were released into the atmosphere contaminating people, animals, water and crops for hundreds of miles. Between 1944 and 1956, 530,000 curies of radioactive iodine was released. The Colombia River became grossly contaminated. In 1954, with six reactors on line, 8,000 curies of radioactive material was dumped into the river each day. By comparison, the radioactivity released at Three Mile Island was 15-24 curies of radioactive iodine. From Chernobyl 3 million curies of caesium 137 was released – a total comparable with the fallout from all nuclear weapons
tests to date. The estimate of all radionuclides released from Chernobyl is 50 million curies.During the Sizewell Public Inquiry it Other incidents, especially those that occurred during the Cold War, were not then made known to the public. Some remain to be described.

We were,and indeed we are, being lied to.Imagine, an explosion at a nuclear plant, by operator error, Chernobyl, explosion, radiation,cities,Chernobyl,Prypyat, evacuated, two cities populations irradiated,heavily,with nuclear radiation.Prypyat,the closest city was 3 kilometers away,none of the cities was evacuated immediately,and the cities still remain abandoned today as unsafe,25 years later.Soviet scientists reported that the Chernobyl Unit 4 reactor contained about 180–190 metric tons of uranium dioxide fuel and fission products. Estimates of the amount of this material that escaped range from 5 to 30 percent, but some liquidators, who have actually been inside the sarcophagus and the reactor
shell itself — e.g. Mr. Usatenko and Dr. Karpan — state that not more than 5–10% of the fuel remains inside; indeed, photographs of the reactor shell show that it is completely empty. Because of the intense heat of the fire, much of the ejected fuel was lofted high into the atmosphere (with no containment building to stop it), where it spread.Contamination from the Chernobyl disaster was not evenly spread across the surrounding countryside, but scattered irregularly depending on weather conditions. Reports from Soviet and Western scientists indicate that Belarus received about 60% of the contamination that fell on the former Soviet Union.

A large area in Russia south of Bryansk was also contaminated, as were parts of northwestern Ukraine.The explosion at the power station and subsequent fires inside the remains of the reactor provoked a radioactive cloud which drifted not only over Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, but also over the European part of Turkey, Greece, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Poland, Estonia, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France (including Corsica, Canada and the United Kingdom (UK).The plume of radioactive debris has been said to be equal to the contamination of 400 Hiroshima bombs.That from the explosion of the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant,a nuclear plant explosion and meltdown, whose radiation was detected as far away as Sweden.

So nuclear energy is safe? That’s what they tell us. Look at it all and what can and does happen.Look at Japan.A nuclear power plant is most certainly not safe.
Cables obtained by Wikileaks show warning to Japan of danger posed by powerful quakes, official negligence, and accusations of nuclear accident cover-ups.Taro Kono, a high-profile member of Japan’s lower house, told U.S. diplomats in October 2008 that the government was “covering up” nuclear accidents and ignoring alternatives.Japan was warned more than two years ago by the international nuclear watchdog that its nuclear power plants were not capable of withstanding powerful earthquakes, leaked diplomatic cables reveal.And now the United States on Wednesday advised Americans in Japan to evacuate to a greater distance from a damaged nuclear power plant than the Japanese government is advising.  White House officials warn that the situation in Japan is deteriorating.U.S. authorities are recommending that Americans stay 80 kilometers away from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was badly damaged in last week’s earthquake and tsunami.

Japanese officials have advised people to move 32 kilometers away from the facility.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters that the advice comes from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, whose chairman met with President Barack Obama earlier in the day.  “Advice the Japanese government is giving, based on the information it has, is different from the advice that we would be giving, if this incident were happening in the United States of America,” he said.

Japan has had other accidents,basically glossed over……Tokaimura was the site of Japan’s worst nuclear plant incident in 1997, when 35 workers were contaminated by radiation after a fire at a processing plant was not extinguished properly and caused an explosion.

A series of incidents at Japanese nuclear power stations in recent years has undermined confidence in the safety of this form of energy production, says BBC Tokyo correspondent Juliet Hindell.In July, cooling water leaked from a pipe in the building that houses the reactor at the Tsuruga nuclear power plant in northern Japan It took Japan Atomic Power, the company that operates the plant, 14 hours to shut down operations after the leak was discovered.Executives in charge of the reactor said radiation from the leak was 11,500 times the safety limit.The earlier figure given was 250 times the limit, and the change has sparked accusations of a cover-up.

Nuclear energy is safe?So THEY say, but t’is a lie, says I. One is reminded of Sir Walter Ralegh’s poem on lies, appropriately entitled…….

The Lie.

Sir Walter Ralegh
c. 1592

Go, soul, the body’s guest,
Upon a thankless errand;
Fear not to touch the best;
The truth shall be thy warrant:
Go, since I needs must die,
And give the world the lie.

Say to the court it glows
And shines like rotten wood,
Say to the church it shows
What’s good, and doth no good:
If church and court reply,
Then give them both the lie.

Tell potentates, they live
Acting, by others’ action;
Not lov’d unless they give;
Not strong, but by affection.
If potentates reply,
Give potentates the lie.

Tell men of high condition,
That manage the estate,
Their purpose is ambition;
Their practice only hate.
And if they once reply,
Then give them all the lie.

Tell them that brave it most,
They beg for more by spending,
Who in their greatest cost
Like nothing but commending.
And if they make reply,
Then give them all the lie.

Tell zeal it wants devotion;
Tell love it is but lust;
Tell time it meets but motion;
Tell flesh it is but dust:
And wish them not reply,
For thou must give the lie.

Tell age it daily wasteth;
Tell honour how it alters;
Tell beauty how she blasteth;
Tell favour how it falters:
And as they shall reply,
Give every one the lie.

Tell wit how much it wrangles
In fickle points of niceness;
Tell wisdom she entangles
Herself in over-wiseness:
And when they do reply,
Straight give them both the lie.

Tell physic of her boldness;
Tell skill it is prevention;
Tell charity of coldness;
Tell law it is contention:
And as they do reply,
So give them still the lie.

Tell fortune of her blindness;
Tell nature of decay;
Tell friendship of unkindness;
Tell justice of delay:
And if they will reply,
Then give them all the lie.

Tell arts they have no soundness,
But vary by esteeming;
Tell schools they want profoundness,
And stand too much on seeming.
If arts and schools reply,
Give arts and schools the lie.

Tell faith it’s fled the city;
Tell how the country erreth;
Tell manhood, shakes off pity;
Tell virtue, least preferred.
And if they do reply,
Spare not to give the lie.

So when thou hast, as I
Commanded thee, done blabbing;
Because to give the lie
Deserves no less than stabbing:
Stab at thee, he that will,
No stab thy soul can kill!
